  34. I will try to explain your problem as simply as is possible. 
  35. To optimize performance, VMS attempts to write pages to the page 
  36. file in contiguous pieces. The first message is generated when 
  37. the space in the page file been broken up into a significant 
  38. number of smaller pieces. The second message is generated when 
  39. the situation gets worse. The immediate effect of this, as you 
  40. have noted, is a severe reduction in system performance.
  41.  
  42. Without going into a long explanation, the solution to this 
  43. problem is to increase the size of the PAGEFILE or, 
  44. alternatively, create a secondary pagefile on a different disk 
  45. (this is done using the SYSGEN utility) and connecting it (which 
  46. you will need to do once manually, and in the future in the 
  47. command file SYS$MANAGER:SYSTARTUP_V5.COM.
