- Pettengil@cvg.enet.dec.com ("mulp") replied to my worries about impending
- MAVC user woes as follows:
-
-
- --> |>he care what architecture he happens to get?) and wonders why he gets
- --> |>
- --> |>Image file VXCRNA::DISK$C:[JULIAN]COUNTER.EXE;20
- --> |>Image is not an OpenVMS Alpha image
- -->
- --> If only it were that clean; the actual message is:
- -->
- --> $ r TOOLS$DISK:[TOOLS$COMMON.SYSEXE]SET_TERM_INQUIRE_ALPHA_32.EXE;1
- --> %DCL-W-ACTIMAGE, error activating image TOOLS$DISK:[TOOLS$COMMON.SYSEXE]SET_TERM
- --> _INQUIRE_ALPHA_32.EXE;1
- --> -CLI-E-IMGNAME, image file $255$DUA118:[TOOLS$COMMON.SYSEXE]SET_TERM_INQUIRE_ALP
- --> HA_32.EXE;1
- --> -IMGACT-F-IMG_SIZ, image header descriptor length is invalid
-
- I can only assure him that the error message I quote is that obtained when
- attempting to run a VAX executable on one of the Alpha Flamingos we have here!
- Perhaps the error message he quotes is that obtained when trying to run an
- Alpha executable on a VAX machine (and I see on re-reading my original post
- that that was the way round I had cited the example).
-
- Why doesn't DEC bite the bullet and decide that all Alpha executables will
- be called .EXA, all Alpha object files .OBA, all object libraries .OLA and
- so on . Then the respective LINK,RUN etc commands on both platforms would
- take the appropriate defaults, and the difference would be clear to the users?
-
- I believe it's wildly optimistic to imagine that DEC can get by without having
- to do some major re-writes of documentation, in any case.
