-
- I just spent three days of vacation at Comdex, where I saw much which has
- been promised for some time but is finally on the market in abundance:
- laptop computers with excellent color screens, pen computers, dot matrix
- and laser color printers, desktop video and many multimedia offerings.
-
- Microsoft dominated the floorspace and had advertisements all over the city,
- but IBM won best new product for 1992 with OS/2 and had a large room of
- vendors displaying their products for OS/2, so the competition continues.
-
- Microsoft demonstrated Windows NT running on a Sequent, an DEC Alpha, and
- pcs, but it is delayed until next summer. Previously I had heard that NT
- requires 16 Meg to run well, but at Comdex I heard that it really needs 32 Meg.
-
- IBM showed OS/2 running on Mach, which is coming next year. I was fortunate
- attend a presentation by Lee Reiswig about the future of DOS and OS/2. IBM
- is adding the following to DOS: Workplace Shell look and feel, multitasking,
- pen support, Romable, enhanced memory manager, improved utilities and improved
- networking.
-
- There are over 600 32-bit applications now shipping for OS/2, with more
- announced. IBM showed DeScribe, AmiPro beta, Word Perfect beta, Notes, and
- voice controlled applications, and a pen computer that included voice
- annotations.
-
- In December OS/2 will be released with the 32-bit graphics engine and Win 3.1
- support. In early '93 more printer support and 32-bit high resolution display
- drivers will be available, and later in '93 systems management capabillity,
- multimedia, pen/speech, object technology from Taligent, and better security
- will be added. Also new network services are coming. The demonstration
- included remote access to OS/2 from anywhere--via dial, cellular, or wireless
- phone.
-
- Another thing which I saw and want is the tiny, $300 14.4 kilobit modem
- and fax.
