- This is what we did:
- 1) We had been running DOS 3.31 on an 80 meg Plus Hardcard.
- We decided to give OS/2 a shot.
- 2) We bought a 200 meg IDE drive, and installed it in the
- machine, removing the hard card in the process.
- We did this because we wanted to protect the data on the hard
- card. We were worried that the OS/2 installation might screw
- it up - better safe than sorry.
- 3) Installed OS/2 on the new drive. This was (relatively) painless.
- 4) After playing with OS/2 for a bit, we decided to try to get
- the data off the hardcard, so we re-installed the hardcard,
- and re-booted OS/2. No luck. Varying types of error
- message, but, in particular, OS/2's FDISK did not recognize
- the presence of a second drive.
- 5) Calls to IBM tech support produced only "It should work",
- along with suggestions to try a few different drivers (from the
- OS/2 distribution) However, nothing helped. I even asked
- the IBM guy whether there was any procedure to "register" the
- new drive with OS/2. I indicated that I was used to DOS,
- where all you had to do was put the disk in and voila!
- (I.e., you did the hardware install, and the BIOS/DOS figured
- it out automatically) He indicated that it "should" work the
- same with OS/2.
- 6) After several days of no luck, we decided to trash it all and
- start over. This time, we did the (fresh) install with the
- hardcard installed. Lo & behold, this time, FDISK recognized
- the second drive. This makes me think that OS/2 must
- preserve some kind of "state" information on disk between
- boots that tells it how many disk you have.
- 7) I think we may have been able to fix this by doing "Selective
- Install", but I did not get a chance to investigate that.
-
- So, is there a straightforward way to add another disk to an installed
- copy of OS/2, or do you have to re-install? (As I said, IBM was no help)
