- My original problem was that although I had more than enough hard drive space
- that was contiguous, I could not grow my swapfile out more than 9 1/2 MB.
- Some facts to bear in mind are that I had 8 MB of RAM and about 30 MB of free
- space.
-
- I received several responses on this problem and they all were basically
- about the same two pieces of information:
-
- 1) When you have enough Hard Drive space, Windows reccomends a swapfile size
- and will not use a swapfile greater than four times the size of free memory
- that you have after loading Windows. However, this can be changed by
- entering system.ini, going under the [386Enh] section, and setting the
- PageOverCommit variable to your desired multiplication factor (default
- is 4).
-
- 2) When you do NOT have enough hard drive space, Windows will automatically
- recommend a swapfile size equal to 1/2 of the available space. Several ways
- suggested to get around this centered on the basic fact of somehow making
- more space on your hard drive (by temporarily zipping some stuff or copying
- it off the hard drive), setting the size in Windows, and then copying your old
- stuff back.
-
- Note: It is not a good idea to make your swap-file too big because there will
- just be too much disk activity and all your applications will run far slower.
- The only reason I need such a big one sometimes is to run Mathematica w/ its
- gigantic kernel and integration packages (usually swallows 10-12 MB of just
- virtual memory - can you believe that? :)
-
- Thanks to all who responded,
