- Steve Hendershott asks:

-
- and JQ Johnson replies:
- >So far, I haven't seen any data that leads me to believe that W4W will
- >work (or at least, work well) doing netbeui over TCP. This in turn
- >leads me to believe that W4W would be a disaster in a typical routed

-
- Actually, I don't see any reason why it shouldn't work. WFWG talks to a
- NetBIOS interface, which then talks to a protocol stack, which then talks
- to an NDIS interface, which then talks to the actual network hardware.
- Microsoft ships NetBEUI, their protocol for supporting NetBIOS, with
- WFWG. The NDIS driver will allow other protocols such as TCP/IP to
- peacefully coexist with it. We do it every day with our LanMan network.
-
- I'm not sure what Mr. Johnson is talking about when he mentions "doing
- NetBEUI over IP". Maybe he is confusing Novell style networking with
- the approach Microsoft has taken. Novell networks use IPX. If IPX isn't
- feasible for whatever reason then they tunnel it in another protocol.
- I.e. IPX "over" (fill in the blank). Network applications that use the
- NetBIOS interface such as WFWG or LanMan are largely protocol independent.
- If a different protocol is called for then a different NetBIOS protocol
- is chosen. As far as WFWG being a "disaster" in an IP routed environment
- I suppose the market will decide that. It is certainly technically feasible,
- though.
