- Is it worth getting? That would be subjective, but I think everyone
- should have one of the major utility packages.
-
- RAMBOOST may or may not increase the amount of RAM you have available
- for applications. I have tried it a few times, and how much it does
- depends in large extent on what you have in your config.sys and
- autoexec.bat when it starts. Depending on configuration I went from
- -20Kb to +10Kb available. But I had my system pretty well tuned.
-
- One area of improvement is in the CPBACKUP program. Especially in
- device support. It now has support for SCSI tape drives, and even
- includes a license for the Adaptec ASPI managers. Theoretically, this
- will allow you to hook up a 25Gb Exabyte drive and back it up with
- CPBACKUP.
-
- Another addition is in machine<->machine connectivity. PC-TOOLS now has
- some peer-to-peer networking capabilities. It can run over IPX
- or NetBIOS. This is an extension to the COMMUTE program that already
- allowed one to do remote access (a la Carbon Copy).
-
- PC-TOOLS 8.0 also includes a license for CP Anti-Virus with a coupon
- for one free update. They sell updates on a subscription plan, or you
- can download them from CP's bulletin board or CI$ forum. The scanner
- is OK, but not on par with F-PROT (my standard). But it does have
- some integrity checking features, and it is a wise thing these days to
- do integrity checking AND scanning.
-
- I guess the thing that most people are keying on with this upgrade is the
- lack of native Windows clients. Central Point was up-front about this,
- and they are merely following the lead of their major competitor,
- Symantec's 'Norton' series. Symantec unbundled their DOS and Windows
- versions last year, now CP is doing the same.
