- I am trying to find some decent software to access my systems at work.
- That means running Windows in 386 enhanced mode. I've got to 14,400 V.42bis
- modems running on either end.
- So far I've tried:
-
- PC Commute - This is so slow, buggy and awful I won't comment any further.
- PC-Tools, Windows hangs up the modem, and would never come up completely.
- ~$75 upgrade.
-
- Close-Up - I really like the "reliable link" aspect of this software - you
- ($160) don't see any line noise. However, when I run windows in 386
- mode, the modem hangs up on me. Also, I've had windows hang
- a couple of times. The "editor" functions to edit a modem
- setup string are the most bizarre I've seen in any software
- package - virtually unuseable. Also, changing from a "direct
- connection" to a modem causes the software to reboot the system.
- In my opinion, this is fairly buggy software. The documentation
- regarding use with windows is geared to 3.0 (!) and although there
- are pounds and pounds of it, most of it is repetitive and useless.
-
- I think vendors of such programs should have to use them before they sell
- them. The current trend towards ever buggier software is totally
- unacceptable.
-
- Is anybody using such a program over a telephone line (not on a network)
- for serious work? Or is the market just full of clownware?
