- I agree. Let UNIX and Coherent be what they are. I bought Coherent
- because I wanted to learn more about UNIX. The less UNIX-like it is,
- the less I'd be interested in it.
- Also, as a UNIX newbie, the last* thing I'd want to do is introduce
- another variable by running an OS I have to patch/fix myself. After I
- learn to "drive", then I'll look under the "hood" (i.e. Linux).
-
- Before too much longer, if not already, you won't have to patch/fix Linux to get
- it running. As a matter of fact, I didn't have to do anything for Linux but
- feed
- it installation disks, just like Coherent. The only difference was that the
- Linux
- installation (SLS) was easier and miles faster (Linux floppy drivers are faster
- than
- DOS while Coherent seems to fun about 1/6 the speed of DOS on my box).
-
- Linux needs to have a distribution with permissions and everything set to a
- "base"
- configuration. That is happening. I had to change quite a few permissions on
- my
- Coherent system so that is to be expected in UNIX until people start documenting
- things like that much better.
