  34. Welcome to the fourth issue of OCSUG.  Who says that Christmas doesn't come in
  35. November? SUN is spoiling us once again with announcements of new products and
  36. upgrades. See the Solar Flares section which will provide a list of the new
  37. items from SUN. In accordance with the new announcements, this month we
  38. feature an article revealing some of the new features of Solaris 2.1.
  39.  
  40. So get a cup of coffee, sit back and relax, and get ready to enjoy this
  41. issue.

  43. What Happened Last Time ...
  44.  
  45. When last we looked in on our intrepid little group, we were sitting around
  46. the campfire held absolutely riveted by the networking presentations.  
  47.  
  48. The lead off presentation was given by Gene Saunders of Sun. He gave a nice,
  49. detailed  account of the new version of SunNet Manager - revision 2.0. He also
  50. elaborated on how other ISV networking packages integrate with SunNet Manager.
  51.  
  52.  
  53. Next up was the Alantec PowerHUB presented by Greg Sonn and Art Laursen. The
  54. PowerHUB is a high-speed bridge/router that can be used to improve
  55. peer-to-peer performance, off-loading the servers from routing.
  56.  
  57. The presentations were rounded out with a review of network acceleration from
  58. Interphase Corporation by Lance Jay Lee. Their main thrust for improving
  59. network performance centers around the Interphase NC400 Network CoProcessor.
  60.  
  61. All three presentations have a nice set of slides. If anyone did not receive a

  81. We will start the meeting with our usual informal roundtable of information
  82. sharing. Certainly, the most prevalent topic will be Sun's very recent release
  83. of both new hardware and software that were announced this month, most of
  84. which are listed below in the Solar Flares spot.

  86. Since this meeting was designated as a programmer's meeting, the topics for
  87. all presentations will be about  programming tools. First up will be the
  88. presentation of the latest in the line of programming tools offered by Sun by
  89. Bill Mutchie of Sun. SPARCworks, It 's a programmer's paradise!
  90.  
  91. Sebastian Nania and Janet Wieczkiewicz from SmartStar Corporation will review
  92. their Motif-to-SQL Database Application Builder, VISION. A note from their

  98. Graphical User Interface (GUI) Builders have demonstrated a dramatic reduction
  99. in the effort required to create engineering and business applications for
  100. workstations. The difficulty begins when attempting general purpose SQL
  101. database access. At SmartStar Corporation, we have taken our vision of
  102. workstation-based application development and made it a reality. SmartStar
  103. Vision solves the Motif-to-SQL application builder problems with coding - we
  104. call it NoGL.

  153. talking about you. Yes, you! You can put down your cup of coffee and listen
  154. for a moment.

  156. I don't want to sound like I'm whining or redundant, but to tell you the
  157. truth, I do not receive much input from you on what  you would like to get out
  158. of our meetings or from this chapter of the user group. It seems that everyone
  159. is content to just show up if the the particular subjects appeal to them. Sure
  160. there are a few of you who are very helpful and giving toward this project.
  161. For that I am very grateful.

  163. Please remember, this is your user group. It can only function, thrive and
  164. survive if we all participate.
  165.  
  166. I know that complacency is really a lost art form and that there are a lot of
  167. grand masters out there.  
  168.  
  169. Along the same lines, if everyone is happy with the way things are going,
  170. please advise me. Feedback from you is the only way I have to learn if I am
  171. doing what's expected of me.

  201. MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Nov. 4, 1992 -- SunSoft today introduced a new version
  202. of the Solaris 2.0 distributed computing environment. Called Solaris 2.1, the
  203. software boasts new installation, administration, security and
  204. internationalization features, providing commercial users with the industry's
  205. most powerful 32-bit software environment for the corporate enterprise.
  206.  
  207. Based on extensive customer input and testing, the Solaris 2.1 computing
  208. environment incorporates more than 1,000 product improvements, delivering up
  209. to a 40% increase in areas of network performance and up to a 50% increase in
  210. user interaction performance over Solaris 2.0. The Solaris 2.1 software
  211. includes full symmetric multiprocessing and multi-threading capabilities,
  212. dramatically increasing system performance. In addition, the new version
  213. offers major enhancements in the graphics area, providing users with 2D-3D
  214. capabilities critical to the technical and high-end commercial markets.

  216. Today's announcement adds to the momentum for the Solaris computing
  217. environment. Sun Microsystems Computer Corp. (SMCC), the leading UNIX system
  218. supplier, will make Solaris 2.1 available for all existing SPARC systems,
  219. including its multiprocessor workstations and servers, by the end of the year.
  220. Solbourne, CompuAdd, Toshiba and Hyundai will use the software in their
  221. systems targeted for shipment next year.

  223. More than 5,000 32-bit applications -- the largest base in the world-- are
  224. available for Solaris today. Already, more than 800 of the top applications
  225. are being ported to the Solaris 2.X environment including products from Oracle
  226. Corp., Sybase Inc., Lotus Development Corp., Computer Associates
  227. International, Electronic Data Systems, Autodesk Inc. and Adobe Systems, Inc.
  228. In addition, the Solaris 2.1 environment is binary compatible with Solaris 2.0
  229. allowing applications to run without modification.

  231. "Major corporations worldwide are rightsizing their business today, requiring
  232. CIOs to select optimal solutions for running their corporations efficiently
  233. and cost effectively," said Edward J. Zander, president of SunSoft, Inc.
  234. "Solaris 2.1 with its robustness and performance is clearly the `Right Box For
  235. Rightsizing' for global businesses in this decade and beyond."

  241. ensure that Solaris 2.1 with ORACLE7 will deliver industry leading OLTP

  246. The Solaris 2.1 software environment offers several new features to make
  247. system management and security easy and cost-effective across the enterprise.

  252. JumpStart - a feature that automatically installs and configures hundreds of
  253. systems across the network simultaneously with no user interaction required.

  255. Upgrades - the foundation for automatic network upgrades to future Solaris
  256. releases. Upgrades can be tailored for highly customized systems using
  257. interactive menus.

  261. Online: Backup - the industry's first product available for restoring and
  262. backing up Solaris 2.X data across the network. A fully automated tool, it
  263. enables system administrators to safely back up data while machines are
  264. active, allowing users to continue work without interruption.

  266. User Manager - a graphical tool enabling users anywhere in the world to add
  267. new accounts and build user directories on remote servers.

  269. Database Manager - a powerful tool for system managers to review and change
  270. information in the central administration database, enabling easy system
  271. updates and management across global networks.

  273. Print Manager - a graphical interface for users to set up the print servers
  274. and easily connect their client systems to a variety of printers anywhere in
  275. the enterprise.

  277. Host Manager - a desktop tool for connecting and configuring client systems
  278. onto the network in the three most popular profiles: stand-alone systems,
  279. diskless clients and dataless clients.

  281. Software Manager - an icon-based product that allows users to browse, install
  282. and manipulate third-party applications regardless of whether they are on a
  283. CD-ROM, hard disk, or across the network.

  287. Solaris SHIELD - a product that brings C2-level security to the Solaris 2.1
  288. environment, a requirement for government contracts and demanding commercial
  289. environments.

  292. enhance workstation and server security across the network.

  296. XGL Graphics Library - a foundation providing software vendors with the
  297. features required to develop 2D-3D geometry-based graphics applications,
  298. critical to the technical market. The library consists of a software
  299. programming interface, hardware device driver interface, and a run-time
  300. environment.

  302. Symmetric Multiprocessing

  304. Multithreading (SMP/MT)

  306. The symmetric multiprocessing and multithreading capabilities included in the
  307. Solaris 2.1 environment greatly increase the performance of multiprocessor
  308. systems such as the new SPARCstation 10. Multithreading also speeds up I/O
  309. processing and concurrency, improving the performance of mission-critical
  310. commercial and technical applications.

  314. Solaris 2.1 comes bundled with the AnswerBook hypertext-based on-line
  315. documentation facility that contains information from end user manuals. Users
  316. customize their search by calling up a summary for a brief description or
  317. entire product pages for more detailed information using interactive menus at
  318. their desktop.

  320. Localization

  322. Solaris 2.1 is fully localized for the worldwide commercial market, providing
  323. users with a consistent desktop environment in their native language. The
  324. product is localized in German, French, Italian, Swedish, Japanese, Korean and
  325. two versions of Chinese: PRC (People's Republic of China) and ROC (Republic of
  326. China).

  328.  Future versions of the Solaris software will incorporate additional features
  329. to address the changing needs of the business market. Solaris will include
  330. high availability features, enabling users on a corporate network to maintain
  331. access to their NFS and DBMS data even in the event of server failures. The
  332. Solaris high availability software will be modular, allowing system managers
  333. to tailor the software for individual needs.
