- The "redbook" titled "Smalltalk Portability: A Common Base" (doc. number
- GG24-3903) published by the IBM International Technical Support Center
- (ITSC) is now available to the general public. Any local IBM branch
- office can handle your order. IBM charges $2.75 for printing and handling.
-
- The Common Base specification is joinly developed by IBM, Digitalk,
- KSC, OTI, and ParcPlace. Each vendor has signed a contract with IBM
- to participate in this effort.
-
- The goals of the Common Base are (among others):
-
- 1. To establish a stable base for application development.
-
- 2. To show that Smalltalk can be as portable as C.
-
- Many customers have concerns about the portability of Smalltalk across
- different implementations due to the differences in features such as
- graphical user interface. In contrast,, no one would say C is not
- portable because Motif is different than Windows. The Common Base
- attempts to define the language elements of Smalltalk which can be
- standardized and made portable.
-
- Common Base is still young and it needs a lot more work. We hope that it
- will be a good first step toward establishing a Smalltalk standard.
