-
- WHY ATTEND HOPL-II?
-
- FOCUS: LEARNING FROM HISTORY
-
- The first History of Programming Languages Conference, held in 1978, was
- informative, exciting, and enjoyable; it was reported that nearly every
- attendee attended every session. HOPL-II promises to be its equal or better--
- a unique, high-quality conference that will give you new perspectives on the
- past, ideas for the future, and a surer sense of how to get there.
-
- The papers at HOPL-II will explore in depth the development of programming
- languages, concepts, and features. Papers will be presented on Ada, ALGOL 68,
- C, C++, CLU, Concurrent Pascal, FORMAC, Forth, Icon, Lisp, Pascal, Prolog,
- Smalltalk, and simulation languages. The development of a language takes place
- in an historical context of goals, constraints, and assumptions. Many of us
- have been exposed to only a few languages--and seldom their history--through
- our education and careers. The stories that language developers tell can teach
- each of us lessons. We learn that new ideas may not be so new, old ideas may
- lie hidden, and alternatives may have already been explored.
-
- Look over the program; we hope you'll want to come to HOPL-II, and we know
- you'll be glad you did.
-
- FORUM: THE CRAFT OF HISTORY
-
- HOPL-II will include a "Forum on the History of Computing". "History" refers
- not only to what happened in the past, but also to the craft of recording and
- studying how it happened. The Forum will introduce computer scientists to the
- work and challenges that abound in this field.
-
- BANQUET: A SPECIAL TREAT
-
- At the HOPL-II banquet on Thursday evening, the conference speakers will
- regale us with entertaining and amusing tidbits from the technical, economic,
- and social milieu of their work.

- LOCAL TRANSPORTATION
-
- The conference hotel, the Cambridge Center Marriott, is a short taxi ride
- from Boston's Logan Airport. The hotel is adjacent to the Kendall Square
- subway station, on the MBTA ("T" ) Red Line. Both Harvard Square and
- downtown Boston are just two stops away. The airport is also accessible via
- the T, though you must change trains twice.
-
- PATRIOT'S DAY
-
- Monday, April 19, the day before HOPL-II starts, is Patriot's Day, a
