  16. I just ran a search for the word 'humanities' on Veronica.  The
  17. search worked, as best as I can tell, but I have several thoughts
  18. on how this process will affect gopher providers and searchers:

  20.   1) this will facilitate locating items in gopherspace to
  21.      the extent that the titles reflect the content of the
  22.      files in gopher.  This is a reiteration of the facts
  23.      stated in the Veronica announcement.
  24.  
  25.   2) there may be a problem with cross-listed materials in that
  26.      it is not clear how many duplicate items were returned to
  27.      me in the search.  The search returned matches on the term
  28.      humanities, but it does not reflect unique occurences of the
  29.      found items.  As you know, gopher providers (myself included)
  30.      place pointers to others' stuff (avoiding duplication of stuff
  31.      and space on the local server), but Veronica does not eliminate
  32.      these duplications - I think;
  33.  
  34.   3) Veronica does not point out the parentage of the items.  This
  35.      could be a problem because people often want to know the
  36.      source of the things they are getting.  However, it is possible
  37.      to display the technical information with some of the gopher
  38.      clients, and this feature would show parentage.  It does mean
  39.      that novice gopher users will need to learn how to decipher
  40.      the technical information, and it means that all gopher clients
  41.      should have this feature.

  43. Another seperate problem that we've had here is maintaining the list
  44. of gopher servers on our server: it takes time and continuing effort.
  45. It looks like the Veronica creators have figured out how to automate
  46. the process of logging into the various gopher servers therby validating
  47. the addresses, and also getting the secondary addresses.  This would
  48. be a very much desired feature to implement on our gopher server.

  50. Finally, I would like to say that this is the closest I've seen
  51. anyone get to implementing the 'ask the reference librarian' function
  52. on the network yet -- good work!
