- Report by Gitta Domik
-
- Chair: Gitta Domik (domik@cs.colorado.edu)
- Participants: Jerome Cox (jrc@cs.wustl.edu), Larry Hodges
- (hodges@cc.gatech.edu), Kurt Lauckner, Robert McDermott
- (usirjm@red.vis.utah.edu), David McNabb (mcnabb@avl.umd.edu),
- Chris Olsen (olsen@npsp.physics.nps.navy.mil), Ron Pickett
- (pickett@cs.ulowell.edu), Allen Schiano (schiano@uic.edu),
- Hikmet Senay (senay@seas.gwu.edu), Len Zaifman

-
- Goal of the workshop:
-
- The workshop was aimed at describing the diversities and commonalities
- of college/university courses in "Scientific Visualization" (SV) and
- making useful recommendations for educators in this field. The
- diversity of SV courses is rooted in the diverse audience (e.g. computer
- science versus science students; students knowledgeable about
- concepts and algorithms in computer graphics versus students new
- to computer graphics), diverse goals for such a course (e.g. preparing
- students for the use of visualization software versus preparing
- students for research in visualization versus
- preparing students to work in an interdisciplinary team to find solutions
- for computational science problems through visualization) and
- the diverse background of the instructors (e.g. computer graphics,
- sciences, graphical design, perception).
-
- Agenda, workshop preparations and how far we actually got:
-
- The agenda included introductions, several short presentations of
- visualization courses, a discussion of the diversity of goals for
- such courses, identification of "core topics", as well as references,
- software and public domain data to recommend to instructors.
-
- The preparations for the workshop included a survey of SV course
- outlines, textbook recommendations, and some information about
- visualization software and public domain data. During the workshop
- the time constraint (less than 3.5 hours) did not allow to follow through
- with the agenda; diversities became already clear during introductions
- and discussions about course objectives and outlines. The workshop had a
- great value in understanding various requirements visualization courses
- will need to fulfill and hearing about first hand experiences in teaching a
- visualization course.
-
- As a result, textbook recommendations got only little attention, public
- domain data and software were not discussed. "Core" topics were shortly
- discussed, but no major changes were made to the original list of topics,
- because of time constraints. All this remains for a follow-up workshop
- in the future.
-
- The workshop summary therefore includes a profile of each participant,
- sample course outlines of participants, and a list of course objectives
- that we agreed upon during the workshop. The result of the workshop is
- hoped to benefit educators in Scientific Visualization: for those who
- currently teach such courses it is a way to compare their topics to
- other course outlines; for those who are developing new visualization
- courses it is a means of identifying their objectives with workshop
- participants and contact workshop members for more information.
-
- The workshop summary report as well as additional information
- is now available in the anonymous ftp account of cs.colorado.edu
- (128.138.243.151) in the following compressed files:
-
- /pub/cs/vis/vis_workshop92.ascii.Z ... workshop summary
- /pub/cs/vis/vis_workshop92_addresses.ascii.Z ... full list of addresses
- of workshop participants
- /pub/cs/vis/course_outlines.ascii.Z ... course outlines in Scientific
- Visualization and related topics as submitted by educators
- /pub/cs/vis/vis_data.ascii.Z... visualization data sets as available
- on the net (list not complete!)
- /pub/cs/vis/vis_references.ascii.Z ... list of books, videos and journals
- recommended to educators (list not complete!)

-
- Those files are clearly too long to send them all over the world via News.
-
- The files will be updated as new information becomes available. If you have
- something to add, please send information to domik@cs.colorado.edu so I can
- make it available to the community. Thanks to all of you who have sent me
- information so far over the net. I have tried to acknowledge everyone in the
- appropriate files.
