- Any freelancing takes time and either money to buy or rent equipment. I
- have been running a oneman show for ten years and have expanded from
- professional video into computer graphics. If I were starting now I
- would call all the video and computer companies in your area and ask
- about projects. Act like you are a potential client and ask educated
- questions. You may find you can make money by selling other peoples work
- with your creativity. Alot of people believe they can buy gear, hang out
- a shingle and make money. It does not work that way. Once you have found
- out about the competition, find out about potential clients. Who in your
- area can use and will pay for your services. As far as equipment is
- concerned never buy anything that cannot pay for itself. I know alot of
- people who invested in gear only to spend years paying it off from their
- salaries. Don't assume you need anything. You can spend $3,000 for a Hi8
- or $100,000 for a digital machine or anything in-between but the key is
- what do you clients want and what will they pay for. I have been using
- 3/4" and now 3/4" SP with great success. I have no intention of changing
- for several years because this is where my market is. If I have a
- special situation I can rent from St. Louis or Chicago. Remember your
- goal is to make money not make money for equipment manufacturers and
- vendors. I make more money freelancing than I do teaching and it keeps
- my knowledge of technology up-to-date and my production skills keen.
- Good Luck...By the way taxes on a small businessperson will kill you.
