- Regarding your request for information concerning ATM switch
- manufacturers,
- the following are among the growing list of those who currently sell
- ATM
- switches. Try also Bolt, Beranek, and Newman (BBN).
-
- FYI, we have purchased a Fore switch and interface cards and have
- ordered
- switches from MPR Teletech (scheduled for delivery in December).

- You may find the following information of interest. I would
- be happy to send you further details about our ATM
- networking products if you are interested.

- Fore Systems, Inc
-
- --------------------------------------------------------
-
- Fore Systems' ATM LAN products are now available to meet the
- networking
- needs of distributed multimedia systems. They provide the high
- capacity and flexible multiplexing needed to integrate high-quality
- image, live video, and audio communication with traditional data
- communication. And they are based on the international Asynchronous
- Transfer Mode (ATM) standard ensuring compatibility with other ATM
- networks, both local-area and long-distance.
-
- Fore Systems' high-performance ATM Switches are the key to delivering
- the performance for multimedia systems. The ATM switches form the
- core
- of ATM LANs. They interconnect workstations over dedicated
- fiber-optic
- links. In addition, they can be connected together enabling you to
- build larger ATM LANs as your ATM networking requirements grow.
-
- Fore Systems' ATM LAN delivers high-performance ATM communication to
- personal computers and engineering workstations through ATM Computer
- Interfaces. Each interface includes special hardware support for ATM
- communication. Every computer that is equipped with an ATM computer
- interface has a dedicated fiber-optic link to one of Fore Systems'
- ATM
- switches, allowing users to take full advantage of the
- high-performance
- communication offered by Fore Systems' ATM LAN.
-
- Fore Systems' line of ATM Computer Interfaces includes the SBA-100
- for
- Sun SPARCstations, the TCA-100 for DECstation 5000s, and the GIA-100
- for SGI Iris Indigo workstations. Fore Systems' ATM interfaces come
- with device driver software allowing existing IP/TCP applications to
- make immediate use of ATM LANs, as well as an ATM Application
- Programming Interface that enables multimedia applications to take
- advantage of the capabilities of ATM LANs. We have plans for both
- EISA and MCA
- ATM interfaces later this year.
-
- All of the ATM Computer Interface products are available in both 100
- megabits-per-second versions (conforming to the draft ATM Forum UNI
- Specification) and 140 megabits-per-second versions.
-
- Fore Systems' ASX-100 line of ATM LAN switches support up to 16 ATM
- connections and up to 2.5 gigabits-per-second switching bandwidth.
- The
- ASX switch products include complete switch control software,
- allowing
- dynamic virtual connection establishment and resource control, as
- well
- as SNMP-based network management software.
-
- The ASX-100 line of switches is currently available in two basic
- configurations: the ASX-110 is a self-contained ATM switch including
- a
- SPARC switch control processor; the ASX-111 is packaged in the same
- enclosure as the ASX-110 but requires a customer-supplied
- SPARCstation
- for its switch control processor.
-
- Both the ASX-100 and ASX-111 are available in 8-connection and
- 16-connection versions (upgrades from 8 to 16 connections are also
- available). In addition, as with Fore Systems' ATM Computer
- Interface
- products, the ASX-100 and ASX-111 are both available in 100 and 140
- megabits-per-second versions.
-
- All of Fore Systems' current ATM LAN products operate over
- FDDI-compatible multimode fiber.
-
- Please contact Fore Systems for price quotes or additional product
- information. You can reach Fore Systems by phone at 412-967-4040, by
- FAX at 412-967-4044, or by email at <info@fore.com>

- >From: little <little@mprgate.mpr.ca>
- I have forwarded your request to Peter Briscoe at MPR Teltech Ltd.,
- who have been supplying ATM switches for about a year to Bellcore,
- Sun, and others.
-
- A comment on the PHY layer interface: We are developing a very
- low cost STS-3 PHY interface for the LOCAL interface, with
- sponsorship
- from Sun, HP, BNR (Northern Telecom), SynOptics, Interphase, and a
- host
- of other companies (16 in total).
-
- This interface will be available early next year. It is likely to
- become
- the 'standard' PHY layer interface for both Local and Network
- interfaces.
- Sun plans to put a version of this interface on every SPARC Station
- motherboard in the 1994 time frame, and SynOptics will be deploying
- hubs
- with these interfaces starting in 1993.
-
- From my admittedly biased point of view, I think other PHY layer
- interfaces are a dead end, so your comment about eventually ending
- up
- with some other PHY layer seems reversed: They will cost more, and
- will
- not have unshielded twisted pair transmission capability, so what's
- the
- point. SONET based framing technology is a true networking protocol,
- whereas other techniques are just fancy serial to parallel
- convertors.
-
- The SUNI chip, as we call it will sell for less than $50.00 in
- volume.
- It integrates complete SONET framing, ATM cell processing, FIFO
- buffering,
- complete diagnostic and performance monitoring functions, and high
- speed
- serial interface (155 Mbit/s) in a single chip.
-
- A complete port card using a twisted pair interface will cost about
- $70.00
- for the components.
