  23. What was eerie about this action was the trouble the sysop at
  24. the gateway was taking to intercept and read mail, when the
  25. default (I ran the same software) would leave no trace on his
  26. machine at all.  It would ordinarilly pass like a ship in the
  27. night through his node, except that he took pains to copy it
  28. over so he could snoop.

  30. I don't buy the horror stories.  There is a local case of a long-
  31. time suspected purveyor of kiddie porn who was busted after a
  32. year-long sting, but I hardly believe that justifies all the
  33. paranoia I see, specifically in that network.

  35. Probably your system is much more likely to be stolen or
  36. burned or damaged by natural disaster than be confiscated
  37. due to gendarmes tracing contraband...

  39. Interesting side issue comes up.  I connect with four other
  40. machines, and each of them are privately owned, though one
  41. is a special MX hookup agreement with the University.  I
  42. wonder how many Waffle sites are non-institutional individually-
  43. owned home jobbies?
