  13. I had been in Boston working for the Smithsonian for a year
  14. and a half, awaiting one of the few trips back to Santa Cruz
  15. i had while away.  I was talking on the phone with a NYC friend
  16. of mine, when i started hearing distressed conversation coming
  17. from the next room, where my housemates were watching the Bay
  18. Bridge Series.  Hearing "earthquake" in their conversation, i
  19. practically hung up on my friend and rushed to the TV, where 
  20. the first images of the SF destruction were coming in from the
  21. Goodyear blimp.

  23. Like everyone else, i was shocked and totally frightened by 
  24. what i was seeing.  I found myself explaining sights to my
  25. housemates, and seeing the Marina in flames reminded me that
  26. my family, too, resided in a "total liquefaction zone", the
  27. Sunset District.  I spent a great deal of time very worried.

  29. I had to get away, and a friend took me to a cafe to chill out.
  30. I couldn't stop worrying, though.

  32. Later that night, my mom got through to me on the phone from 
  33. SF, and i was describing to her the coverage on the news since
  34. she still had no power.

  36. Six days later, i was in Santa Cruz with my girlfriend.  I was
  37. lucky to have already had my ticket, but the flight was still
  38. cancelled half way home.  SF airport wasn't taking too many 
  39. flights at the time.

  41. During the week long visit, i experienced countless aftershocks.
  42. (my girlfriend lived a quarter mile from that famous long crack
  43. across Summit Road in the mountains)  The sight of my beloved
  44. Santa Cruz (and everyone's nerves :-) in ruins is a shock and 
  45. dismay i still haven't got over (not the least reason for which 
  46. is that SC still hasn't fully recovered).  Now i am back on the 
  47. west coast, awaiting the next one here on the Hayward Fault......
