- At the Saugus speedway (in Saugus, a bit north of Los Angeles) they
- have an amateur event before the stock races begin. I don't know if
- it costs anything. They lend you a helmet and you get to take two
- laps of the track (I think it's 1/3 mile each lap). They time you and
- the fastest car in its class gets a prize. They loosely divide up
- the classes by the number of cylinders in your engine - 4, 6, or 8.
-
- Pretty neat to see a Ford Escort (non-GT version) zooming around the
- track. Even neater to see a Lotus Esprit Turbo hit the wall!
- Amazingly, the damage to the car was minimal (maybe a scratch or two,
- no dents). Some of the people driving obviously knew their way around
- the track, and some didn't know beans.
-
- It was also interesting to see a 74 year old driver in a midget
- formula racer flip over during a real race, his helmet scraping along
- the ground under his car - not hurt!!!
-
- You might also try asking in rec.autos.hotrod, if that group really exists.
