  23.            CRAY Y-MP EL ENTRY-LEVEL SUPERCOMPUTING SYSTEM

  26. MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- November 17, 1992 -- Digital Equipment 
  27. Corporation, introduced today a new third-party cooperative 
  28. marketing initiative in support of the CRAY Y-MP EL entry-level 
  29. supercomputing system.  The program formalizes the relationship 
  30. between Digital and its complementary service organizations (CSOs), 
  31. allowing the companies to facilitate support of applications for 
  32. this system and to provide them to customers.

  34.      Two leading supercomputing applications developers, The MacNeal 
  35. Schwendler Corp. and Molecular Simulations Inc., were among the 
  36. first to become Digital CSOs for this program.  Digital sells, 
  37. markets, distributes and services the CRAY Y-MP EL entry-level 
  38. supercomputers through a business partnership with Cray Research 
  39. Inc.

  41.      "By working up front with our application-developer CSOs, we 
  42. can deliver more tightly-integrated solutions to customers," said 
  43. Kevin McCoole, applications marketing manager for Digital's Cray 
  44. Program Office.  "Along with the high level of application 
  45. performance needed for departmental solutions, which is delivered 
  46. via the Cray architecture, this integration gives the customer a 
  47. distinct competitive advantage."

  49.      The MacNeal Schwendler Corp., a Los Angeles-based supplier of 
  50. computer-aided engineering software to the aerospace and automotive 
  51. industries, believes the CRAY Y-MP EL system opens the power of 
  52. supercomputing to a broad new customer base.

  54.      "Using the CRAY Y-MP EL system, development groups can now cost 
  55. effectively run and analyze large and complex modeling applications 
  56. within their own departments," said Tom Vorgitch, MSC's corporate 
  57. marketing director.  "MSC's participation in this new program is yet 
  58. another move forward in our longstanding relationship with Digital, 
  59. and another step ahead in meeting the growing analysis needs of our 
  60. customers."

  62.      Another CSO to join this program is Burlington, Massachusetts-
  63. based Molecular Simulations Inc. (MSI), a leading supplier of 
  64. molecular modeling applications to the pharmaceutical, chemical and 
  65. material science industries.

  67.      "Through this program, computational chemists can now bring 
  68. Cray resources, which were previously available only through time 
  69. sharing, into the facility," said Kirk Bishop, MSI's manager of 
  70. strategic relations.  "We believe this represents an opportunity for 
  71. reduced `time to solution' at a reduced cost for a substantial 
  72. subset of our customer base."

  74.      The CRAY Y-MP EL family of air-cooled processors meets the 
  75. needs of complex technical applications that demand high throughput 
  76. and heavy use of vector processing.  Typical production environments 
  77. include government, science consumer product and manufacturing R&D, 
  78. pharmaceutical research, and oil and gas exploration.  With a 
  79. starting price of $299,000, the CRAY Y-MP EL system is the price/
  80. performance leader of entry-level supercomputing.
