  20. there will be the COSIT conference in fall 1993, where there will be a good
  21. place to present and learn about GIS user interface. if anybody volonteers,
  22. there could be a one or two day workshop on GIS user interface organized to
  23. follow the main conference.

  62. The COSIT Symposium will concentrates on theoretical aspects of spatial
  63. information and deal with all aspects of 'large scale' or 'geographic'
  64. space and description of objects, processes or events in large scale space.
  65. Spatial information theory is the basis for the construction of GIS but
  66. necessary for other uses of geographic information. The use of the
  67. technology reveals a large number of interesting research questions, which
  68. require an interdisciplinary approach to their solution. COSIT intends to
  69. bring together researchers from different disciplines, e.g.,

  111. One day of the conference will be devoted to papers discussing aspects of
  112.         CULTURAL DIFFERENCES
  113. in spatial information treatment, which may be found in many  of the above
  114. topics.
  115.  
  116. The conference program will be selected by an international,
  117. interdisciplinary program committee. Three planned INVITED  LECTURES by
  118. eminent scientists in the field will start each  day of the conference. The
  119. conference is the place to present  results from recent work and discuss
  120. advanced 'work in  progress'. The research contributions will be selected
  121. through rigorous review of full papers and proceedings will  be printed
  122. before the conference.

  124. PANELS will discuss relevance of research questions and  compare possible
  125. approaches. Before the conference, TUTORIALS introducing the topics of the
  126. conference will be organized. They will last from half a day to two days.
  127. One tutorial will discuss the preparation of scientific papers for
  128. conferences and their presentation. After the conference, TOPICAL MEETINGS
  129. ("birds of a feather  sessions") can be organized after the research
  130. conference and  proposals from 'convenors' are welcome.  A ROMANCE LANGUAGE
  131. round table will be scheduled.

  142. Authors are requested to submit full papers in English, not abstracts, to
  143. the program chairs. The title page  of the paper should contain the title,
  144. author(s), affiliation(s), the submitting author's mailing address,
  145. telephone number, fax number and e-mail address, and an abstract. Total
  146. length of a paper is expected to be less than 18 pages double spaced (less
  147. than 6000 words) including figures and bibliography. The Program Committee
  148. will evaluate the papers based on scientific significance, relevance to the
  149. conference, novelty, relation to previously published literature, and
  150. clarity of presentation.

  170. REGISTRATION
  171. The registration fee is 250.000 L (approx. $200) with a reduction to
  172. 230.000 L for registration before April 15,  1993. Registration for
  173. students will be 100.000 L. (approx. $100). Registration includes
  174. proceedings, symposium attendance, special events (ice breaker and dinner).

  176. A Note on the Site
  177. The island of Elba is one of the nicest island in the Mediterranean sea,
  178. and September is the best month to visit it. The weather should still
  179. permit swimming in the clean sea. It is easily reachable by ship from the
  180. port of Piombino, which is well connected by train with Pisa and Rome.
  181. Marciana Marina is a small town on the western end of the island. It offers
  182. a choice of hotels etc. and  should provide ample opportunity for
  183. serendipitous meetings in many small restaurants. There are a considerable
  184. number of  hotels but September is still high season and we suggest to plan
  185. ahead.
