- Look up some papers by Bielajew and Shizgal in the early 1980"s...
- They found a direct axonal connectivity between the lateral hypothalamus
- and the ventral tegmental area of a rat bar pressing for electrical
- stimulation. (The technique is quite complicated so reading the papers maybe
- more useful).
- Self-stim isn"t really found diffusely...(Don"t I know that!!!!).
- In fact, along the path of the MFB (medial forebrain bundle), it is quite
- prominent, but as you go outside of this region, it becomes more and more
- difficult to obtain the behaviour. It isn"t that such areas as prefrontal
- cortex, caudate putamen, and the like are not involved in reward, but the
- reward system in these structures is qualitatively and quantitatively
- different from the MFB. Then again, maybe we are not tapping at the
- system in the right way?
- Studies have been done to show that self-stim is not
- just an epiphenomenon, but is in fact activating neural systems that are
- naturally stimulated during appetitive behaviours (such as eating, compulation
- etc). For example, stimulation-induced feeding (a model for feeding) as well
- as self-stim are obtained from lateral hypothalamus and sulcal cortex. (See
- Wise, R.A plus McGregor & Atrens).
