- We have been running with our local fix for apostrophes in the 5.0.2
- opac for a couple of months now and all seems well. The essence
- of the fix is to distinguish the apostrophe from the single quote
- (which is needed for a search like 'near' adj east) by the fact that
- most apostrophes are surrounded on either side by alphanumeric
- characters. We squeeze out such apostrophes but leave alone the
- single quotes. This applies only to keyword searches and seems to
- comply with the way NOTIS earch works.
-
- I sent the fix to NSI but then I sent a "superior" suggestion. In
- neither case did a problem tracking number seem useful.
-
- The superior suggestion is to let opac users substitute the double
- quote character for the single quote, reserving the apostrophe
- character for e.g. O'brien or 'twas. Then the opac programs can
- sqeeze out the apostrophes reliably without harming the needed
- quotes. Lastly, the opac program would then need to change the
- double quotes to single quotes to comply with NOTIS earch's
- expectations. This would be an easy change to program. I did not
- implement it because I did not want to confuse patrons coming to us
- on the internet from other NOTIS sites.
-
- I'd like to suggest that those concerned about this should open a
- "problem" with NSI and register their suggestions. Perhaps if
- enough of us requested the double quote solution, NSI would
- implement it. I fear that if the NOTIS clients don't request it
- then NSI would be hesitant to introduce the functionality change.
