- Subject: Looking for NeXTStep 3.0-compatible Gopher *Server*
- Lines: 40
-
- Here at PSU Library Computing Services we have an *original* cube, still with
- the 68030 CPU, a 600MB hard drive, and the original floptical drive. It runs
- 1.0 NeXTStep.
-
- We've ordered the hardware & software to upgrade to a 68040 CPU, double the
- memory, add a CD-ROM drive and get NeXTStep 3.0 on CD.
-
- Our intent is to lead it out of the dark ages and its status as a doorstop
- and make use of it as a Gopher Server for the University Libraries to load
- with information to be made available University-wide (and beyond).
-
- I'm hoping that somebody can point me to a good, *stable* server someplace
- out there, that I can install with a *minimum* of difficult.
-
- I am *NOT* a Unix [systems] programmer; I understand C, but don't have the
- vocabulary of the normal Unix programmer to recognize common Unix utilities
- being invoked in a script file, for example. Our previous experience with our
- NeXT stopped at 1.0, which seemed too unstable and insecure to risk placing on
- our network. So I need something pretty self-installing if at all possible.
- However, the important thing is to find a Gopher Server that can run on a NeXT
- running NeXTStep 3.0 -- if that means I spend a few weeks/months getting up to
- speed in NeXTStep or Unix, so be it; it'll just take longer, that's all. We've
- already ordered the Addison-Wesley 8-volume collection through Happy Man, so
- we should have a pretty decent reference library shortly.
-
- As an aside; when I subscribed to NEXT-L in mid-September, I also subscribed to
- the Systems and Miscellaneous Digests; while NeXT-L has been active, nothing's
- come across on either NEXTSY-D or NEXTMI-D... are they just very quiet or are
- they dead?
