- I'm afraid that the situation is not so clear (otherwise we might
- simply think of getting the wall back ...).
- The influx of east germans was handled quite well. The economy in the
- west took profit from the fact that the east started consuming goods
- that were produced in the west (but the eastern production went down
- and causes serious problems).
- The real major problem is that the unification does not bring only
- benefits, and that they definitely do not prevail yet (probably for
- some more years to come). The unification costs. It costs money
- (beyond other things like effort, accomodation to new situations etc.).
- We here in the west will have to pay it. And it's too much to simply
- pay it out the wallet. Even spending the income increase for the next
- years won't be enough. We'll have to take restrictions. And for long
- times there have been illusions about that (also at people who
- should have known it: the US government elaborated a scenario to this
- sometimes in the 50ies, and today it mostly sounds like a deja vu).
- This whole situation has of course no positive effect on the
- german mood, and the global stability (not to forget the issue of
- refugees and hostilities towards foreigners - not directly related
- to the unification, but still very important).
- And our neighbours are of course affected in various ways
- (popsitive and negative).
-
- About the EC and their union I wouldn't really fear. Since the
- governments and the industry wants it, it'll come anyway.
- And the political implications of that will also be
- restricted by each european governments weak points
- (take as an example the various colliding interests in the
- civil war in ex-Yugoslavia, where "old alliances", suspicion
- towards Germany and possible extension of german influence,
- the greek "copyright" on the name of "Macedonia" and all kinds of
- other problems lead to a patt situation). A possible unanimous
- attitude of the EC is used as an argument in favour of the union,
- but I can't really believe it.
