  17. This is being cross-posted to govdoc-l, pacs-l, help-net, libref-l, and
  18. libadmn.  My apologies for any inconvenience.

  20. During the Presidential campaign, I downloaded and printed for use by
  21. our students numerous speeches and position papers from the candidates.
  22. The documents were downloaded from nptn.org, clinton@marist, and
  23. info.umd.edu.
  24.  
  25. We would like to permanently retain this material.  However, our
  26. Associate Librarian for Reference and Information Services has posed
  27. the question of whether or not the material is copyrighted.  To carry
  28. the question a step further, can we assume that information found on
  29. databases accessed through gophers, for example, are public domain
  30. unless copyright ownership is specified? How are other libraries
  31. handling this situation?
