- In my more cynical moments, I ask myself whether the NAS
- exists so that Steve Balch can be on leave (and thus
- not have to mark papers) and get to travel around the
- country, rack up frequent flier miles, and get to
- meet interesting people.
-
- The local NAS people in South Carolina made a big
- pitch about opposing political correctness in the
- classroom, but it turns out that in practice
- they oppose the expression of views that they
- disagree with.
-
- The NAS makes some important points. It is quite
- clear that in some circles, in some Women's Studies
- and Afro-American Studies departments/centers, one
- must toe the correct political line. It also is
- clear that some liberal/left-wing professors
- use their classrooms as bully pulpits.
-
- However, as is so often the case (with academics? with
- humans?) they go overboard, exaggerate, and see
- PC everywhere. Moreover, ultra right-wingers of the
- Accuracy in Academia sort use the NAS and the PC
- debate to impose their own brand of PC.
