- You are right, I do not like Richard Nixon much. I suspect that the
- fact that "other Presidents did what he did, but just didn't get caught"
- (paraphrasing Jim's comment) may be true, but he DID get caught - he lied to
- Congress about what he knew when, he appeared to have involved himself in a
- cover-up to obstruct justice, his minions (for whom he was responsible)
- committed burglaries (not one, but at least two), dirty tricks (and though
- this had been done before, I recall Segretti went prison for a short time
- for his hijinks), lying under oath, and paying people to be silent about crimes
- they had committed. To use a Bushism from this campaign, "Richard Nixon
- displayed a pattern of disdain for the law, an attitude that he, as President,
- was above the law, and a general disdain for the very persons he was elected
- to serve." Admittedly, his "power-grubbing" IS indigenous to most politicians,
- Nixon was just so blatent about it! No matter his achievements, which I grant
- despite my dislike - the opening of the door to China WAS a great act - his
- wrongdoing and overt attempts to subvert the law are what cause my dislike.
- I perceive the Presidency as a symbolic office in addition to its practical
- functional behaviors, and Nixon stained that symbol by his actions. Yes,
- Jack Kennedy was a womanizer, LBJ made himself rich at the public trough (as
- did Nixon, another bone of contention for me - misuse of funds), Ford was
- a honest man in way over his head, Carter was an idiot with good intentions,
- while Reagan and Bush seem to me tweedle-dee and tweedle-dum of the rich men
- of this country, serving a small class to the cost of all others. For me,
- even though I liked Kennedy, Truman was the last admirable President to sit
- in the Oval Office. Richard Nixon was competent, but he was so flawed that
- he really lowered the quality of the office by his behavior while sitting in
- it. VMS
