  14.   Until you mentioned it, I had forgotten that today was the 29th anniversary
  15. of JFK's death. (Not that I really care - while it had large meaning for our
  16. generation, and I _do_ remember what I was doing - I believe there are other
  17. events more important in my life.)
  18.   No, my question is that you seem to have a deep hatred for RM Nixon,
  19. excoriating him as you did. Why is that? Whence comes this absolute hatred?
  20. Just as a minor observation, from the words you used to whip him, I would
  21. guess that you would put Nixon down there with Stalin, Lenin, and Hitler
  22. (Hmmm?) I am not a supporter of Nixon, but is the man so bad as that? Or is it
  23. that he refused to pander to the (public relations) desires of the nation, and
  24. did what he thought was best for the nation - after all, he got us out of
  25. VietNam, and earlier, when Communism seemed to be the greatest threat, he
  26. fought against the perceived threat. Is it his fault that he always looked as
  27. though he had a five o'clock shadow that make-up couldn't or wouldn't cover?
  28. He may have been a power-grubber (I don't _know_), but in what way is that (1)
  29. a fault, or (2) any different than _any_ other politician? And remember how
  30. thankful everyone was in 1968 when LBJ quit the race? And how optimistic
  31. everyone was when Nixon came in? In 1973, he fulfilled a promise he made -
  32. fighting forces out of VietNam, thus abrogating several treaties the US had
  33. made over the previous two decades, e.g., SEATO.
  34.   Was Nixon a criminal? From what I understand from my studies, he did nothing
  35. any other president or politician has done - he simply got caught while in
  36. office.
  37.   Nixon had substance, LBJ had substance (I won't tell you explicitly what
  38. kind of substance - now there is a president to rank down with that other
  39. Johnson!), Kennedy had style without substance as did Carter and Reagan.
  40. Truman had both style and substance - none since.
  41.  
  42.   By the way, I volunteered to go to VietNam - I was about two weeks too late.
  43. The Air Force wasn't sending anyone new by then (1973-4).
