- NAPLPS is an ancronym for something that starts out: North American
- Protocol L? P? S? (I don't know what the LPS stand for!) What it is
- is a graphics standard that uses vector graphics and resultant images
- are very small files. For example, you can draw a large circle that is
- "filled in" with a color and that entire image requires 8 bits. What it
- does for telecommunications is allow the insertion of graphics in e-mail.
- David Hughes, Old Colorado City Communications, Colorado Springs, CO, USA,
- is an expert in NAPLPS and he is currently putting the polishing touches
- on some software called TELEDRAW that will revolutionize basic tele-
- communications.
-
- Jim Fleming described the NAPLPS ANSI standard in Byte Magazine,
- February-May, 1983. It is the standard used by Prodigy for their
- graphics. Dave Hughes has refined the use of NAPLPS to the point where
- it is capable of very fine artwork.
-
- Dave's e-mail is dave@csn.org (and many other addresses). Look for
- NAPLPS newsgroups on Internet, Bitnet, Usenet, and Fidonet. There
- is shareware available for a basic NAPLPS drawing program. The original
- source of the shareware is: Microstar Software, Ltd., 34 Colonnade
- Road North, Suite 100, Nepean, Ontario, Canada, K2W 7J6 and a copy
- is available from them (with documentation) for $75. It runs on MS-DOS.
-
- We picked NAPLPS for use with our VBI project because it ships images
- very quickly (fast enough to incorporate simple animation).
