- Subject: Re: Simple/cheap laserdisc control software for PC?
- Lines: 47
-
- In reading the comments on cheap DOS laserdisc control, I was
- puzzled by the message from Stan Diamond about X-Commands in
- Windows, etc. All that is needed to be able to control a
- laser disc player is to be able to control a serial port.
- That can be done with countless different software packages,
- including good old FREE BASIC!
-
- However, assuming that Dan Wheeler's desire for simplicity
- precludes that option, the suggestions of LinkWay are almost
- certainly the best ideas. We have used it here for some time
- now, find it much easier for students (I'm not at all sure why)
- to learn than HyperCard, and have no real complaints.
-
- Just for the record, we have NOT found it necessary to buy
- anything other than Linkway 2.01 itself, contrary to the suggestion
- that some developer's tool kit might be needed. We did buy such
- a thing for v1.0, but found its functionality built-in to 2.01.
- This assumes, though, that you want a Pioneed 2200/4200/8000.
- For others, you need to get drivers from the company listed in
- the manual (MonkeyTree). The price of LinkWay here in the
- Chicago area is about $75 (source available upon request), which
- is less than the cost of the Voyager Videostack that was suggested,
- which is needed to give videodisc control to HyperCard.
-
- As a final point, I really suggest LinkWay Live! as the best of
- all worlds. It's about double the price (ca. $150) and has all
- the drivers for various players, a great videodisc control panel
- icon, a movie capability very similar to QuickTime, etc. This is
- the newest version, but too big a change to just be v3.0 or
- whatever. All this, yet still capable of running on a very
- modest platform, unlike Toolbook and other (fine) Windows
- products. It's truly a fine choice for schools.
