- The American Women's Trans-Antarctic Expedition (AWE)
-
- Hello! As you read this, four women are preparing to walk 1500 miles across
- Antarctica, in a four-month culmination to a project now several years old.
- The American Women's Trans-Antarctic Expedition (AWE) is anxious to have
- students and teachers around the country follow their trip as it happens.
- These four women (aged 35-45, none bigger than 5'4" and 120 lbs) will be
- pulling sleds weighing as much as 200 lbs across the continent under their
- own power, without the aid of dogs or machines.
-
- They hope to draw attention to several themes: the fragility of the
- environment and the importance of treating it with respect; the capacities of
- people who work for their dreams; the potential of women to accomplish
- difficult tasks; the importance of research in women's health issues; and the
- power of education. The team will set out in November 1992 and hope to
- complete the journey by March 1993.
-
- On behalf of the team, I invite you to join in the mission, to read and think
- and explore and share with students and teachers around the world. To receive
- regular updates via telecommunication, send a message of request with your
- e-mail address to:
