  26.     The American Women's Trans-Antarctic Expedition (AWE)

  28.  Hello! As you read this, four women are preparing to walk 1500 miles across
  29. Antarctica, in a four-month culmination to a project now several years old.
  30. The American Women's Trans-Antarctic Expedition (AWE) is anxious to have
  31. students and teachers around the country follow their trip as it happens.
  32. These four women (aged 35-45, none bigger than 5'4" and 120 lbs) will be
  33. pulling sleds weighing as much as 200 lbs across the continent under their
  34. own power, without the aid of dogs or machines.

  36.  They hope to draw attention to several themes: the fragility of the
  37. environment and the importance of treating it with respect; the capacities of
  38. people who work for their dreams; the potential of women to accomplish
  39. difficult tasks; the importance of research in women's health issues; and the
  40. power of education. The team will set out in November 1992 and hope to
  41. complete the journey by March 1993.
