  42. MAYNARD, Mass. -- November 16, 1992 -- Digital Equipment Corporation
  43. announced today that it will extend its relationship with Microsoft
  44. by reselling Microsoft Access and by porting DEC Rdb, Digital's
  45. strategic relational database, to Microsoft's Windows NT operating
  46. system.
  47.      Microsoft Access is a database management system for the
  48. Windows operating system that provides easy-to-use features and
  49. powerful data access for PC users. It is a complete desktop database
  50. system that includes forms, report generator, and graphical query
  51. tools.
  52.      Using the recently announced Open Database Connectivity (ODBC)
  53. client driver for Digital's Rdb database, a Microsoft Access PC user
  54. can access, modify, upload and download Rdb data to and from Windows
  55. environments. This will enable an entire new class of Rdb users to
  56. take their data with them. Through Microsoft Access applications,
  57. Rdb users will be able to review, modify, and add to their data
  58. while away from the office using their laptops or PCs.  When these
  59. 'mobile users' return to the office, they can easily upload their
  60. data back into the Rdb production database.
  61.      ODBC is an emerging industry standard for client-server
  62. database access. ODBC allows users to easily access, modify, upload
  63. and download Rdb data to and from Windows environments. Customers'
  64. investments in their Rdb database is enhanced by connectivity to
  65. current and future Windows-based ODBC applications.
  66.      "Microsoft and Digital have worked together since the inception
  67. of the SQL Access Group and this agreement further signifies their
  68. shared commitment to the goal of providing a "shrink wrapped" API
  69. (Application Programming Interface) to the PC industry," said Chuck
  70. Rozwat, Digital's Database Manager.
  71.      Digital also announced that the DEC Rdb relational database
  72. will be ported to Microsoft's Windows NT platform on Alpha AXP
  73. architecture.  DEC Rdb is the leading database on the OpenVMS
  74. operating system with over 25,000 development licenses sold
  75. worldwide.
  76.      "Digital's Information Network strategy is to integrate
  77. heterogeneous data managers from multiple vendors and platforms,"
  78. said Hans Gyllstrom, Vice President of Digital's Network Application
  79. Support (NAS) Group. "By making Rdb available on the Windows NT
  80. platform, Digital is protecting its customers' investments and
  81. enhancing the Information Network for all present and future
  82. customers."
  83.      Gyllstrom added, "Digital has thousands of customers who rely
  84. on Rdb to run critical production applications on VAX systems. These
  85. same customers will want the ability to easily migrate their
  86. applications and databases to the Windows NT platform over time. DEC
  87. Rdb for NT AXP will provide customers with an open production
  88. environment offering industry-leading performance, functionality and
  89. cost-effectiveness."

  92. systems division of Microsoft. "This is one more example of the
  93. robustness and the direction of Windows NT. The fully 32-bit,
  94. multithreaded computing of Windows NT will ensure a robust
  95. environment for Rdb database users," added Maritz.

  97. DEC Rdb for NT AXP database in the near future.
