  44. MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- November 17, 1992 -- Digital Equipment
  45. Corporation and Gaussian, Inc. have begun a joint development effort
  46. to adapt Gaussian 92 software to Digital's DECmpp 12000 series of
  47. massively parallel computers. Gaussian 92 is one of the industry's
  48. leading computational chemistry application programs.
  49.      Michael Frisch, president of Gaussian said "I initially worked
  50. on the Gaussian programs at Carnegie-Mellon University, using the
  51. very first VAX-11/780, which is now in the Boston Computer Museum.
  52. Fifteen years later, I am very pleased to participate in this joint
  53. project, which reflects Digital's continuing strong commitment to
  54. computational chemistry and support for the Gaussian programs".
  55.      Gaussian is the market leader in electronic structure software.
  56. Electronic structure is a distinct type of computational chemistry
  57. that uses basic laws of quantum mechanics to model and analyze the
  58. structure and properties of molecular principles.  It is used widely
  59. throughout the chemical and pharmaceutical industries for drug
  60. design, environmental chemistry and basic manufacturing.
  61.      "Gaussian software has run on Digital's VAX computers for
  62. years," said Bill Desimone, marketing manager for Digital's
  63. Molecular Sciences Applications group.  "Running this software on
  64. massively parallel computers is a logical and an important next step
  65. for Digital and for many of its customers."
  66.      "Massively parallel architectures present the next challenge
  67. for computational chemists because they offer the hope of
  68. dramatically reduced time-to-solution for the large problems
  69. chemists are interested in" said Frisch.
  70.      Digital's DECmpp 12000 Series computers range from 1,024- to
  71. 16,384-processor models, and are capable of performing up to 300
  72. million floating-point operations per second (MFLOPS.)  They are
  73. used in applications such as database search, computational
  74. chemistry, automobile design, statistical and financial analysis,
  75. text retrieval, as well as signal, image and seismic processing.
