- As someone pointed out, this gets more complicated because of its
- nature. If the system is decentralized, management becomes that
- much harder. What if I turn my machine off every night? The data
- I have on it becomes unavailable to the rest of the universe. Thus,
- for now, centralized information servers seem to still have a
- definite place in CWIS's.
-
- Definitely - all gophers aren't created equally !
-
- Or maybe just maybe. Things definitely get complicated -- they're
- complicate enough already and there are only 1 million computers on
- the net. I'm not sure I can imagine the administrative structure that
- would allow a "central" facility to support a "paperless" (?)
- university; ideas like Andrew and Athena reveal some interesting
- technical possibilities for merging desktops.
-
- One thing that can make this work, however, is that of "locality."
- Despite the fact that I have access to 1,000 libraries, my local
- library is where I look first. Despite the fact that I have access
- to 1,000 professors, the 4 or 5 that I am taking this semester are
- the ones I am most interested in. And of all the things I am likely
- to need soon, I've made local copies on my local hard disk.
-
- What we'll see, I think, is a "spreading" of information. Something that
- probably closely mirrors the paper information systems we're used to.
- How the system will evolve beyond paper, and how soon, that's what's
- up for grab. I'm guessing that the next decade will be a real mind
- bender. A headline in today's NYTimes Business Section was "Beyond the
- PC" and went on to describe Apple's Newton project; a companion
- article focused on McCaw and The Wireless Networked Nation. All of
- this by 2001? Probably so!
