- Concordia University Library uses these drives extensively. We have a
- couple of observations to make about them. The first is that many CD-ROM
- database vendors don't provide any way of specifying which drive holds the
- required disk, consequently, when the software is loaded, it will perform
- a search of all the drives (doing it's own little inventory, I suppose)
- before booting; which slows things down somewhat. Secondly, when purchasing
- these drives, if you are installing it on an IBM AT class machine or higher,
- make sure to get a 16-bit controller card. The 8-bit controller card will
- slow the system down.
-
- When installing these drives, you may run into problems on machines using
- colour VGA monitors. Usually these can be resolved by changing the addressing
- used by the controller card - the manual should show you how to change the
- jumpers on the cards. Finally, unlike most other CD-ROM drives, the disks
- themselves have to be placed on the caddies face down.
-
- Good luck.
