- I fully concur with earlier comments re. CCOD over a network: it has quite
- obviously NOT been designed as a network product, although it does work on a
- network.
-
- We offer our users three options:
-
- 1) Use it on their own PC over the network. This is the ideal situation but
- means they have to contribute to the network licence. This is expensive,
- especially if you're talking about the version with abstracts.
-
- 2) Use it on the PC in the library with the CC3.INI (initialization) file on
- a floppy.
-
- 3) Use it on the PC in the library using the default initialization file.
-
- The initialization file does not really hugely affect the casual user. The
- main things it controls are access to stored search profiles, search results
- and the "Personal Interest Checklist" of marked articles. These are mostly
- used by dedicated regular users, and these are the people who are more
- prepared to fiddle about putting their own floppy disk in and running the
- program from that. We haven't had any complaints about the program running
- too slowly off a floppy.
-
- IMHO, the multi-issue searching feature is only marginally useful. I was
- expecting much more of this feature, but it is inflexible and slow. It
- should be incorporated into the main body of the program but given ISI's
- record to date on improving the program I guess we can wait another two
- years for that to happen (:-(
-
- Your Director of Libraries must be really fearless to be considering a site
- licence. A CDROMLAN correspondent back in August reported that he was
- unable to negotiate a price under $30,00 p.a. for a licence for up to 20
- users for four different subject editions of CCOD. I find their prices
- excessive.
