- I've no evidence. However, I have seen places where a plastic protection
- device has been placed around the base of trees, presumably to avoid
- this damage.

- The device is a piece of spirally split plastic tube. (I've seen
- smaller versions used to hold bundles of loose cables neatly together.)
- It is unwrapped so it can be placed around the base of the tree where it
- coils itself up again. Hopefully the split means that the bark still gets
- sufficient ventilation.
