  28. I've no evidence.  However, I have seen places where a plastic protection
  29. device has been placed around the base of trees, presumably to avoid
  30. this damage.

  32. The device is a piece of spirally split plastic tube.  (I've seen
  33. smaller versions used to hold bundles of loose cables neatly together.)
  34. It is unwrapped so it can be placed around the base of the tree where it
  35. coils itself up again.  Hopefully the split means that the bark still gets
  36. sufficient ventilation.
