- To get started, I'm a bit... hung up on the vampire subject. I've spent
- a CONSIDERABLE amount of time doing research on real-life sightings and
- the vampire myth/reality.
- As such, I'd like to know what the majority of those who DO put
- thought towards vampires believe about the possibility and traits of the
- REAL creatures (should they exist).
-
- My opinions:
-
- Yes, vampires of one sort or another have lived in history. Too many seperate
- regions of the world have vampire mythology to discount the beings as
- Hollywood hunters -- movie monsters.
- Hollywood did, however, expose the populance to the myths... even if the
- myths presented do not follow recorded "facts."
-
- A) Vampires are undead. Possibly. Diseases once plagued Europe where an
- infected person would drop into a deep coma -- all but indistinguish-
- able from death. People were buried ALIVE (some graves, once people
- became aware of this malady, were outfitted with pullchains and bells
- to signal the outside world for help). I, personally, believe that
- a MAJORITY of historic vampires were these diseased individuals
- driven hysterical and insane from claustrophobia and lack of
- oxygen to the brain. Too many cases, again, of violent-death
- vampires exist to discount.
-
- B) Vampires only come out at night/suffer terribly in sunlight. Nope. This
- was a Hollywood movie tactic to make the creatures seem more
- sinister/evil. Nothing on record (that I've found, anyway) supports
- the allergy theory.
-
- C) Vampires can change into a bat. Again, a plot device to make the vampire
- look bad. According to some sources, Vampires DO possess the ability
- to change into wolf-form, though. It's probable that the mist
- idea originated in an area with lots of fog -- a quiet man
- could attack and escape virtually undetected -- like becoming part
- of the surrounding mist.
-
- D) Vampires must receive permission to enter a house. No plausable reason...
- According to one mythos (middle European somewhere... the exact
- region escapes me at the moment...), Vampires would bang on people's
- windows until the curious person opened the shudders and got attacked.
-
-
- Ugh. I could go on all night, but I have work to do.
-
- Let's see what YOU'VE got, folks...
