  33. Someone else stated to me (in email) that the supposed brutal origins of
  34. the phrase in an old law that sanctioned wife-beating are in fact
  35. folk-etymology.  Unless someone can actually cite the supposed law I think
  36. it's folk-etymology too.

  38. I have always believed the origin of "rule of thumb" is the rule that says
  39. the last joint of the thumb is about an inch long.

  41. In any case, I agree that it would be foolish to avoid this useful phrase
  42. just because some people think it has a brutal origin that hardly anyone
  43. else knows about.
