- Someone else stated to me (in email) that the supposed brutal origins of
- the phrase in an old law that sanctioned wife-beating are in fact
- folk-etymology. Unless someone can actually cite the supposed law I think
- it's folk-etymology too.

- I have always believed the origin of "rule of thumb" is the rule that says
- the last joint of the thumb is about an inch long.

- In any case, I agree that it would be foolish to avoid this useful phrase
- just because some people think it has a brutal origin that hardly anyone
- else knows about.
