- Someone (not a fan) wrote to me to correct a statement I had once
- made in print from "there are a number of ways..." to "there is a
- number of ways...." Of course I was right and he was wrong, since
- sense always is allowed to modify agreement, but I was startled
- to read in a Michael Innes (J.I.M. Stewart) novel "there is a number of"
- (novel dates from mid.1940s).
