- Well, I spent a good part of last Saturday at the Bud Pro
- finals, and got the following info.
-
- I spoke to Patti Serrano, Publisher/Editor of Bodyboarder
- International Magazine (BIM). She told me early next year that
- the Australian bodyboarding mag (the name escapes me)
- will start publishing a U. S. edition. Also, the old
- Bodyboarding mag will come back as a quarterly publication.
- So by next year we will have 3 mags to chose from. Patti
- does not see any competition from the other two, as their
- focus is to make money (i.e. get lots of ads). BIM's
- focus is to promote bodyboarding. (Kevin, she said
- to say hi.)
-
- I then over heard a conversation between Patti and Mike
- Stewart's brother, who is a professional Photographer. He
- is working on a photo shoot of Mike "out" of the water.
- Look for an upcoming issue of BIM to have a cover
- with a portrait of Mike Stewart, no water, no waves, just
- Mike's face. (you heard it here first)
-
- I spoke with Pat Caldwell and Mike Stewart about riding that
- water park wave in Texas (called Schlitterbahn). Mike called
- it one of the 10 best waves he has ever ridden! Pat said it
- reminded him of Kira. Real fast, great barrel. He said the
- water speed is 21 mph. The technique is very different than
- ocean waves. Pat said that after a day (2 min on, 15 min off, for
- 8 hrs) he was so tired he couldn't move. The next day every
- muscle in his body was sore. He said that never happens after
- a big day at Pipe.
-
- I spoke to Bob Sato, Kauai Classic's coach. He said that he has
- met with Mike Stewart, Ben Severson and several others about
- starting a world tour. Also it turns out that the opening meet
- of next years Bud Pro (in Santa Cruz) is scheduled the same
- week as the Morey Boogie Pipe Internationals.
-
- For what its worth, Mike Stewart used an old Turbo Pro/Comp II,
- not the newest Pro/Comp III. Could be because the III has
- been licensed to Morey to build and carries their logo. Mike and
- Morey don't get along due to the board restriction rule at the Pipe
- contest.
-
- In the competition, nether Ben nor Mike made the finals, Mike
- still won the overall tour as the points leader. The finals
- found Tim Ross competing against three members of the
- Kauai Classic Team: Kyle Milagro, Harry Antipala and Chris
- Tennberg. Chris won, his first contest win ever.
-
- And for you surfers that read this anyway, Shane Beschen
- won the contest and the overall tour race, and gets to go
- on and compete in the ASP next year.
