- I made a duvet cover recently. I used a beautiful patterned
- sheet for the top, and a solid black sheet for the bottom. The top
- had shades of purple, magenta, dark blue, and black, so the
- black bottom sheet worked really well. The sheets I used were
- "full" size, as was the comforter. The sheets turned out to be
- actually a couple inches narrower than the comforter, but it
- didn't matter, because it just plumped up the comforter.
-
- I sewed an 8" piece of bias tape on each inside corner of the
- cover, then sewed matching pieces on the corners of the comforter.
- I tie the strips together and it keeps the comforter from
- bunching up inside the cover. I used a 48" long zipper on the
- bottom of the cover.
-
- Here's what I would do differently on the next one:
-
- - Finish the inside seams better. When the cover is unzipped,
- the seams are right there for you to see. I made this cover
- for a friend, and even though she is thrilled with it, I am
- kind of embarrassed that she sees those raw seams every time
- she takes the cover off for washing.
-
- - Use piping around the edge. I think this would give it a
- nice finished look.
-
- - I might try using velcro instead of the bias tape to keep
- the cover and the comforter anchored together. And I will
- probably make anchors in the middle of the sides as well as
- at the corners. My friend says she isn't having any problem
- with it shifting, but even so, I think it would keep the whole
- thing together better.
-
- - I might try using one of those "invisible" zippers if they
- are available in 48" length. (I wouldn't use a shorter zipper
- because it would make it too difficult to get the comforter
- out.) The zipper I used actually looks just fine, but the
- perfectionist in me would prefer to just see a seam instead
- of a zipper.
-
- I was able to find the sheets on sale, so they only cost about
- $9 each. I've noticed that every now and then I can find really
- good bargains on sale sheets, and I always snap them up because
- it's an inexpensive way to get a very wide piece of cotton yardage.
- Good luck on your project. I'd like to hear how it turns out!
