- I think something alot of people are missing here, that is also involved in
- the shareware concept- is choice to NOT register.
-
- For instance, as someone who likes to fiddle, I will DL MODEDIT and probably
- like it -and probably use it a coupla times and keep it on the HD. However,
- the way I personally decide to register something is by running this simple
- test by myself:
-
- "Knowing what I now do about this program, would I pay <such and such> for
- it if I saw it in the store?" Alot of times, although the program is nice,
- the answer to this is no. And, because SW is still commercial (read the GNU
- papers if you think it isn't) it should be held to the same scrutiny.
-
- This attitude of "Ahh, C'mon, pay for it 'cause the author was nice" is BS
- and shouldn't be adhered to. Shareware doesn't give an author a liscence to
- bilk you. And $100's of dollars for alot of these things is evidence of
- that.
-
- Shareware authors should be glad that fiddlers (people like me) keep this
- software on their machines for a while - people who otherwise may never see
- their product could see it there.
-
- Finally, let me define fiddlers so that I don't get squashed - a fiddler is
- someone who finds new things interesting, but isn't going to considder
- buying something JUST because it's new and interesting - only when it serves
- a purpose for that fiddler will it be paid for.
-
- Hope this makes sense - and I believe more of us are fiddlers than we'd like
- to admit. I know I despise it when people go "Register the damn thing."
