  18. This is, of course, my opinion only...

  20. The one CURRENT "good" reason for getting married is to have
  21. that piece of paper that says that you are entitled to speak
  22. for someone else if something should happen to them.  In case
  23. of accident or illness, you are entitled to have first say in
  24. the type of treatment, and the disposition of the assets of
  25. the person.  Until we have in place legal "partnership agreements"
  26. that will give those legal rights to someone who is NOT a
  27. "spouse", then that is one very good reason.

  29. Second - tax breaks.  Quite often married people can file
  30. in a lower tax bracket.

  32. Third - Benefits.  A spouse can inherit financial assets with
  33. less hassle and less taxing than a non-spousal beneficiary.

  35. Fourth - If you are planning on having children together, 
  36. there is still some social status for the children when the
  37. parents are married.  And again - if legal, medical or other
  38. decisions are needed for the children, married parents get an
  39. equal say, whereas unmarried ones CAN have hassles.  Not that
  40. married parents do not, mind you.

  42. Note that all of these are LEGAL reasons.  For myself, I would
  43. prefer a private arrangement of trust, with a legal agreement
  44. for the legal procedings.  I see absolutely NO reason, IMMHO,
  45. why I cannot have one person act for me as my bed-partner,
  46. lover, etc., and another person act as my legal executor and
  47. whatnot.  I have separate people now for insurance, legal,
  48. and financial advice - I rather think the same should be 
  49. true of my PERSON...
