- Once, a few years back, I was listening to an L.A. rock station (I live in the
- area) and in response to a listener's request, the DJ played a Hendrix tune I
- had never heard: "The Stars Play with Laughing Sam's Dice".
-
- Those who have heard it will agree that it is classic Hendrix psychedelia, and
- I loved it immediately. Turns out that it was from the collection of the
- locally reknowned Dr. Demento, who had lent it to the station for the occasion.
-
- So I looked and looked, even in the import bins, in the larger record stores
- in town, but to no avail. A year or so later I was in London (first & only
- time) and found the title on a British album of odd Hendrix stuff called
- "Loose Ends". Imagine my smug delight.
-
- Imagine my disappointment when I got home and played it. It was the same tune,
- all right, but not the same arrangement, I swear. It seemed to be missing a
- lot of the background vocal noises and comments of Dr. Demento's version, and
- in general wasn't as exciting.
-
- So my question is this: does anyone know what I'm talking about?
- and: how can I get the version I originally heard?
