- I hate to get involved in philosophical debates, partially because no
- one ever changes their mind, and partially because I'm not adequately
- equipped. With that disclaimer, it seems to me that recovery is about
- staying away from the substance(s) of abuse, and learning how to live in
- the world comfortably. That means that I will now have choices about
- how I want to live, and I am allowed to choose one of the options. Not
- that I *must* live or not live any particular life style.
-
- For example: I met my sponsor at work several years ago. Steve took
- the AA answering service on Monday night, he and his wife went to AlAnon
- on Tues, AA meetings on Wed and Thur, and his babies bothering him off and
- on during the weeking. I observed this scene and asked, "Gee Steve, it
- seems to me like your whole life is wrapped up with AA." He replied,
- "Yes, and that's the way I like it."
-
- I know another fellow around the South Bay (CA) who has been sober 40
- years or so. He says that he maintains a 2 to 1 ratio of alkys to
- normies. That feels right to him.
-
- Another friend, perhaps 6 years sober, is busy with work, church,
- family, etc. and attends meetings infrequently. His choice.
-
- For some of us, loneliness was a problem, and meeting attendance and the
- fellowship alleviate that condition. Also, when you get used to being
- around people who are honest, then the phonies that show up under the
- normie label aren't nearly so satisfying to be around.
-
- Yes, there are some people who seem to not progress very far from just
- meeting attendance. Or worse. My sponsor told me that when he started
- out there was a fellow there about 4 months sober. After a while, he
- had his hand back up as a newcomer again. Steve talked to him and he
- related, "The old timers here don't think I've got much of a program.
- But when I was drinking I used to go to jail about 3 times a week. Now
- it's only about 3 times a year."
-
- Whatever works......
