  14. Thanks to all who responded to my inquiry about the U.S. prices on
  15. Radio Shack scanners.  I've taken the Canadian and American prices
  16. and created a comparison table as shown below.

  18. The price to the left of the backslash is the current catalogue price
  19. in the respective country.  The price to the right of the backslash 
  20. has had the applicable taxes added.  In Ontario, Canada, this means
  21. 7% GST and 8% PST.  I used New York as a model for the U.S. and added
  22. a 7% sales tax, which would be charged at point of sale to any Canadian
  23. buying at a Radio Shack store in that state.

  25. The third price on the far right in the American example has been corrected
  26. for the difference in currency.  I used an arbitrary figure of 25% for
  27. conversion purposes; obviously this value fluctuates.

  29. I've omitted the PRO 39, as this model is not available in Canada.

  41. Soooo..... here's the bottom line for Canadians contemplating a little
  42. cross-border shopping:

  44. PRO 41: About $23.50 cheaper in the U.S., but you'd only save fifty cents
  45.         if you bought one this month since it's on sale in Canada.

  47. PRO 42: You'd save about twenty bucks on this one.

  49. PRO 36: It's about $72 cheaper stateside, but again the sale comes into
  50.         play.  You'd save $2.63 if you bought one this month.

  52. PRO 35: This model is $77.50 cheaper in the U.S.

  54. PRO 43: A measly $26 cheaper stateside.

  56. Considering the additional 7% GST which would be levied by Canadian
  57. customs upon re-entry to Canada (you WERE going to declare your purchase,
  58. weren't you?), it is apparent that there's little to be gained by shopping
  59. at a U.S. Radio Shack if you're a Canadian looking for a good deal on a
  60. scanner.

  62. A good number of people have suggested to me that substantial savings could
  63. be realized by visiting a Radio Shack store on my next trip to Florida (or
  64. wherever).  Well, I'm afraid it just ain't so.......
