- CTCSS stands for Continious Tone Coded Squelch System. This is a genaric
- name for one of the methods that allows a number of two-way radio systems
- to share the same channel without listening to each other. This is done
- by having each radio transmit a tone in the range of 60-220Hz. All
- radios then mute their speaker until the correct tone is heard. Motorola
- calls this Private Line, GE calls it Channel Gaurd, and RCA called it
- Quiet Channel. There are other methods besides CTCSS, including a burst
- tone (remember the beeps in the Apollo spacecraft radio transmissions?)
- and DPL (a digital code is used in place of the tone).
-
- While I haven't a clue how your scanner works, I suspect that this board
- will allow you to program in a tone so you can listen to something like
- your local police without hearing other chatter on the channel. If the
- board is really smart, it will allow you to program a different tone
- for each scanner channel.
