- When Meshtak awoke, he was in a bed. The bed was slightly too short for
- him, and someone had pushed a footstool over for his legs to rest on. It
- was very comfortable, and Meshtak was still weak, so he remained there.
- As his awareness expanded, he noticed a large dog lying in the doorway
- of the room. He dimly remembered hearing what he thought was a pack of
- valaks, just before he passed out. No, that was impossible, this was not
- Drotshava, this was Generica, and that was no valak, that was an
- ordinary dog, although admittedly a large dog. As Meshtak blinked at
- the hound, it let forth a low growl, from deep within its throat, and
- pierced the draga with its eyes as it slowly raised its head. Meshtak
- reached for his shiftsword, then realized he must have dropped it
- somewhere. "Grot." rasped the draga, trying to get enough control of his
- head to at least put up a decent fight.
- It turned out his worries were all for naught, for at that moment, a
- voice called. "Idgie...Idgie! Hush!" The dog let out a whimper, and put
- down its head. A woman's silhouette appeared in the doorway, and stood
- there. As the draga's eyes adjusted, he could see she was an attractive
- woman, by human standards. (Draga's tended to judge attractiveness by
- smell.) Meshtak estimated her age at about thirty. She had dark hair
- held back in a tail, dark eyes, and wore peasant garb. "So.." he heard
- her murmur. "The sleeper awakens."
- Meshtak spoke. "I am Meshtakalanummus Slayer-of-the-first-Numpka, called
- Meshtak..." he started.
- "Save the titles, hero." she said as she walked over. "I'm Liera, called
- the Widow Wodaoben. I found you outside, on my porch, with an arrow in
- your back." She scrutinized the draga. "I honestly don't know whether to
- turn you in or not...my mind tells me I should, but my instincts tell me
- I shouldn't...and usually I have pretty good instincts."
- "I'm no criminal." said Meshtak. "It is true I was being chased
- by members of the guard, and that was an imperial arrow in my back, but
- I have done nothing wrong, except to make some powerful enemies in this
- town, enemies with lots of contacts."
- A shadow passed over Liera's face. "I don't want any trouble..."
- she whispered.
- "I will do everything in my power to make sure you don't get
- any." said the draga. He tried to sound confident, but his weak strength
- betrayed itself in his voice. "I owe you my life."
- Liera nodded. "Yes." she said. "Yes, you do. We will talk more,
- when you get more of your strength back. As for now, sleep."
- She left the room.
- Meshtak found himself drifting off, and before he knew it, was back asleep.
